How to get to Lofoten

By Plane
If you’re traveling from outside Norway to Northern Norway, you’ll most likely need to fly via Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL). Almost all flights to Northern Norway depart from Oslo, unless there’s a direct route to Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes (EVE).

Option 1:
Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes (EVE)
Evenes Airport is a common gateway, offering the following options:

  • By car: A 245 km (4-hour) drive to Ballstad (rent a car)
  • By public transport: A 235 km (4.5-hour) drive to Leknes via public transport. Change bus in Leknes to Ballstad. Check schedules at Reis Nordland.

Option 2

Bodø Airport (BOO):
Bodø Airport is a common gateway, offering the following options:

    • A 97 km (3.5-hour) ferry ride to Moskenes via thn.no
    • A 97 km (20-minute flight) to Leknes with Widerøe

Continue to Ballstad by public transport. For details, visit Reis Nordland.

Option 3: Flights to Lofoten Islands:

  • Leknes Airport (LKN): The closest airport to Ballstad, located just 15 km away, making it the best option for reaching Ballstad. For public transport from Leknes to Ballstad, check Reis Nordland.
  • Svolvær Airport (SVJ): Located 70 km from Leknes, Svolvær is another option for reaching central Lofoten. Continue to Ballstad via public transport: Reis Nordland.

By boat

  • Bodø – Moskenes: The fastest car ferry to Lofoten, with a 3.5-hour journey. You can bring a vehicle or travel on foot.
  • Bognes – Lødingen: The most popular option for those driving from southern Norway.
  • Skutvik – Skrova – Svolvær: A seasonal ferry running June 1 – August 31.
  • Bodø – Svolvær Express Ferry: A year-round, passenger-only ferry, providing a quick and convenient alternative to the Bodø-Moskenes route.
  • Hurtigruten (Bodø – Stamsund): A scenic coastal voyage offering a unique way to reach Lofoten, with stunning views along the way.

Each route varies in travel time, frequency, and availability, so choose the option that best suits your adventure!

 

By car:
You can rent a car in several locations throughout Lofoten, including Svolvær, Leknes, Moskenes,  Additionally, if you’re arriving by plane, you can rent a car at either Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes or Bodø Airport and drive to Lofoten. The drive from Evenes to Leknes takes around three and a half hours, depending on driving conditions, and it’s advisable to allow extra time during winter. These rental locations offer a variety of agencies, ensuring convenient access to vehicles for exploring the islands.

  • 3-4 days – Perfect for a quick getaway! You’ll have time for highlights like kayaking, snorkeling, and exploring fishing villages like Reine and Henningsvær.

What is a minimum age to snorkel in Lofoten?

Snorkeling in Lofoten is a safe and enjoyable activity for all skill levels, making it perfect for families and children eager to explore the underwater world. The minimum recommended age is 8 years old.

What is the water temperature?

The water temperature varies throughout the year, offering unique experiences in every season. During the summer months, particularly in July and August, the water typically warms up to 12-15°C. Spring and autumn bring cooler conditions, with temperatures ranging from 6-10°C. In winter, the water temperature ranges from 2 to 6°C, offering a serene and unique environment for an unforgettable underwater experience. No matter the season our high-quality gear ensures you stay comfortable and fully enjoy the adventure!

Diving FAQs

Is there a minimum dive certification required to join your scuba dive tours?

To join our scuba dive tours, you need a SCUBA diving certification (PADI Open Water Diver or an equivalent). New to scuba diving? No problem—our 'First Time Diver’ program is perfect for beginners or those trying it for the first time!

Do I need prior experience with a dry suit to join the tour?

No dry suit experience is required to join our tours, especially in the summer when most of our guests choose wetsuits. However, if you’re visiting in the winter, we highly recommend taking a dry suit course. We offer PADI Dry Suit Courses daily in Lofoten, as well as refresher sessions to help you feel confident and ready to dive in!

What equipment do you provide?

Our dive and snorkel equipment is carefully selected from the world’s leading manufacturers, specifically designed for cold water conditions to ensure your comfort and safety.

We provide undergarments and dry suits from BARE and URSUIT SOFTDURA, which are both flexible and comfortable to wear. The front zipper design allows you to put on the suit independently, while the Quick Neck system offers the flexibility to use different neck seal sizes for a perfect fit. Paired with Ursuit XTreme underwear, made from breathable material with double insulation, this setup ensures maximum thermal comfort even in the coldest waters.

For those who prefer wetsuits, we offer AQUALUNG 7mm full-length wetsuits combined with 5mm short suits for added warmth.
For freedivers, we provide the Frivannsliv Evo2 7mm wetsuit, which is perfect for year-round freediving adventures.

To further protect you from the cold, we include 7mm neoprene hoods and 7mm three-fingered neoprene wet gloves to keep your head and hands warm. Additionally: fins, a mask, and a snorkel, so you will have everything you need to fully enjoy your underwater exploration.

Is kayaking in Lofoten suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! The Lofoten archipelago, with its calm fjords, crystal-clear waters, and sheltered areas, is ideal for beginners. Our guided tours are available to help you get comfortable and make the most of your experience.

What should I wear?

Dress in layers with quick-drying materials like fleece or wool, windproof jackets on colder days. Even in summer, it’s often cooler on the water, so an extra layer is a good idea.

Can I rent a kayak without a guide?

Yes, but only if you have a „Wet Card” (våttkort) certification. Without it, guided tours are recommended for safety and to get the best experience.
